How old were you when you started wearing makeup?

I was one of those proud 11 year olds caked in Dream Matte Mousse and white, glittery eyeshadow (applied, of course, haphazardly with one of those spongey sticks). My mum was never into makeup, really, so I never tried playing with hers. I do remember getting into someone’s Lipcote when I was about nine years old, and I honestly thought I was dying because it burned so badly! Hilarious now, but at the time; horrific.

How did you get into makeup?

When I was living in Australia, I didn’t actually have many friends. I was quite lonely and isolated myself out there, and I turned to browsing the interwebz and watching YouTube. It was coming up to my Year 11 prom, and I wanted to WOW everyone, so I stumbled across one of Lauren Curtis’ tutorials. I fell in love! Since then, I’ve spent all my extra cash on building my makeup collection (which I’m now extremely proud of), and I’ve built my skills up too.

What are some of your favourite brands?

Ahhh, where do I begin?! My ultimate favourites are NARS, Benefit, Illamasqua and MAC.

What does makeup mean to you?

Makeup is all about enhancement, not covering things up. It taught me confidence, and it taught me that I actually do have a hobby. My little sister is very horsey, dancey and outside-of-school-club-y, and I always felt like I didn’t have an interest or hobby to do. When I first got into makeup, it was like unlocking a new world and I found new friends in the blogging community.

If you could only wear 4 products on your face, what would they be?

Concealer, eyebrows, winged liner and lip balm.

What’s your favourite thing about makeup?

My favourite thing about makeup is transforming my confidence. I’m dead serious, I love leaving work looking like a bag of shite, then returning an hour later to pick up some shopping and have everyone not even recognise me because I look so much ‘better’. Okay, maybe better isn’t the word. I certainly look different, though, brighter, smilier, more defined and generally happier.

What do you think of Drugstore VS. High End makeup?

Without wanting to sound infinitely snobby, I basically believe that you get what you pay for. High End stuff (broadly) is better quality, so my foundations and brow Products, lip products and contouring bits usually come from High End places because they need to be really high quality. However, there are certainly a few brands that have changed my mind about drugstore stuff. Makeup Revolution has taken my heart, and lots of Sleek’s products are really truly beautiful. For the most part, my face is High End 70/30 Drugstore!

What is one tip you would give to a beginner?

I’m always the first to admit that I really don’t have a clue what I’m talking about when it comes to makeup. I like things that smell good. I like things that look nice. But, for the most part, I just copy what other people are doing and tweak it so it fits my needs. That is the only advice I could give someone; to just find out what suits them and experiment. Or I’d teach them the magic of the sticky tape on the outer corner of the eye to create a wing. Witchcraft!

What is one makeup trend you’ve never understood?

Right, so I’m going to lose major beauty blogger points here, but this whole ‘Brows On Fleek’ malarkey is confusing and nigh impossible. I have bushy, thick brows. I cannot make them so square or faded out. I don’t understand how people can. Believe me, I’ve watched tutorials. I’ve taken a pair of scissors to my brows to try to thin them out, but I think that now I’ve come to terms with the fact that maybe my brow game will never be ‘strong’. I’m quite content with my thick brows!

What do you think of the beauty community on YouTube?

I’m a YouTuber myself, and I’ll be the first to admit that it takes so so so much work (as does blogging). With this in mind, I think that they’re all such a bunch of hardworking, ambitious and skilful people. It’s not easy editing, filming, being personable and friendly on camera, getting lighting right, making people want to actually watch your videos etc etc etc! Having said this, my friends are more among the blogging community, rather than the Youtube community. But then again, maybe when my videos are less crap, I’ll be grabbing iced coffees with Nikki Tutorials and Michelle Phan!
