WHAT I GOT FOR CHRISTMAS | 2019

Here I sit, broken hearted that my favourite day of the year is over again! I’m hungover, weigh an extra stone and guilt-ridden after making my way through the leftovers of the three-bird roast. Now the chaos of the day is over, I wanted to share what I got for Christmas this year before I start putting them all away. I got extra spoilt [as usual, I’ve got the best family ever!] and I love all of my extra-special gifts. Here’s what I got!

THE WINTER EDIT | FEMME LUXE FINERY TRY ON HAUL

My favourite tweet of the year so far has got to be “when we put the clocks back, didn’t realise we put them back to the Ice Age - baltic!”. I agree with this on a spiritual level. I’m flipping freezing. Between 8 cups of tea and evening, a blanket and a hot water bottle, I still seem to be struggling to be warm. I’ve also always struggled to get past the hoodie-leggings-boots winter-wear combo and dress ‘nicely’ in the colder weather. I’m on a quest to have more fashionable colder weather options and look more feminine and chic; less bulky vagrant. So here’s my latest Femme Luxe Finery haul, but this time it’s a winter edit.

PIXI BEAUTY SKINTREATS HAUL + FIRST IMPRESSIONS

It’s been many many many moons since I last ventured away from my holy-grail, much-loved, ride-or-die Liz Earle skincare, but I may just have found the range that can banish it to the back of the bathroom cupboard. I used to spend hundreds of pounds [yikes!] on skincare; I tried loads of different brands in all sorts of combinations until I settled on the Liz Earle collection because I love the botanicals, the vegan formula and the way it made my skin look and feel. But MOVE OVER hun, for I have just discovered the miracle that is Pixi Beauty Skintreats!

I only wandered in to Boots for a little something to cheer me up - maybe a body scrub or a bath bomb is really all I had in mind. My local Boots shop is nothing more than a corridor made up of two rows of shelves and a pharmacy, so I never expect to be dazzled by what I can find in there. I was just browsing the skincare section when noticed - right on the bottom shelf - a small selection of Pixi Beauty products with a proud ‘New In’ sticker on display.

A LITTLE PRIMARK HAUL

Ello ello ello! Nothing too exciting here; just a few bits that I picked up from Primark this week. I literally can’t walk past a Primark without nipping in, and this little haul is quite restrained for me. I’ve been known to spunk a hundred quid in 20 minutes - it’s a problem.

ANOTHER FEMME LUXE FINERY TRY ON HAUL*

This blog is starting to look suspiciously like a Femme Luxe Finery fan-account and I’m sorry if you’re finding this to be an overload of these try-on hail posts at the moment! The truth is, I’m having such a great time collaborating with these guys; I’m surprised at how much I like the clothing despite having my serious reservations about the ‘vibe’ of the website initially.

It’s really nice to receive these clothes, try them on and look GUUURRRD. I didn’t expect to - I thought I’d look like an absolute moron (all flat-chested 5ft2 of me) in these Kardashian-wannabe pieces. I like to be proven wrong. And although we’ve had a couple of hiccups with sizing and quality so far (see my previous posts for details!) I’m really loving what I’m trying from ‘gram-famous Femme Luxe Finery.

THE WHITE DRESS EDIT | FEMME LUXE FINERY TRY-ON HAUL*

Don’t get me wrong; I adore the LBD, but there’s a special place in my heart for a Little White Dress. I accept that this is the completely wrong time of year to be writing up this blog post, but I was recently contacted by Femme Luxe Finery again and decided to put together an all-white lookbook. I have always loved white dresses because they’re feminine, a little bit romantic and it is quite literally the only colour on the planet that makes me look even a tiny bit tanned. I loved the choice of white dresses on their website and struggled to whittle it down to these four. So here they are!

FEMME LUXE FINERY TRY-ON HAUL*

I’m sure this is going to sound relatable to some of you - there are some online clothing stores I avoid because of how the models look. Sorry to say it, but if one of the missing Kardashian sisters is posing up a storm in your outfits, it usually means I’m going to click off that website faster than I say ‘large pinot please’ when I enter a pub. FEMME LUXE FINERY is one of those websites.

FREE PIZZA NIGHT @ THE STABLE*

I get a few invites to events every now and again, and to be honest; usually I’m too shy to even consider going. A room full of people I don’t know?? No thanks! But then I got an invite to The Stable Free Pizza Night. A room full of free pizza??? YES PLS SIGN ME UP ASAP.

The Stable has been putting on a Free Pizza Night in each of their
restaurants around the country as a way of saying thank-you to their customers and welcoming all the new university students to the city. I was so surprised to be invited to their Exeter event, and as an already avid Stable fan, I couldn’t wait to inhale another one of their delicious pizzas.

BABYLISS WAVE ENVY REVIEW | BEFORE + AFTER

I’ve been obsessed with mermaids for as long as I can remember. And what’s the best thing about mermaids? No, it’s not that they can lure idiotic men to their dooms. It’s their beautiful hair, of course (!?!?) When I was younger, in a cruel conspiracy against me, I discovered that I couldn’t french-plait my hair to get those gorgeous beachy waves. I’d beg my sister to plait my hair for me (because she was amazing at it) and ask my mum to try to curl my hair with our straighteners so I could wake up to that sought-after mermaidy texture.

HAIR TRANSFORMATION @ PINK SAYS

If you’re triggered by overgrown roots, look away now! I hadn’t been to the hairdressers for about six months before I booked in at my favourite hair salon in the UNIVERSE; so there was a whoooole lot of work to be done. I’ve been visiting Pink Says in Teignmouth for about four years now, even making the six-hour journey from London to Teignmouth after I moved away. Now I’m back, I’m so glad they’re on my doorstep again because there isn’t a set of ladies I trust so much with my hair. So, after about six months of re-growth and a strange silvery blonde tone to my hair, I booked in for a 9am appointment with Sam.

WHAT I THOUGHT OF MY FIRST BIRCHBOX IN TWO YEARS

I’ve dabbled in the world of beauty subscription boxes since they were first thrust onto our newsfeeds years and years and years ago. I’ve tried GlossyBox, LookFantastic’s Beauty Box and Birchbox, but never been a real ‘subscriber’ to any of them. I kind of got into the routine of allowing a few month’s worth of boxes drop through my letter box before getting completely offended by one of them, and cancelling my subscription to go looking elsewhere. The last time I ordered a Birchbox was in May of 2017, but when I spotted a discount code for a £5 box + P&P, I decided to give it another whirl. Here’s how I got on…

COFFEE @ PINK MOON

Sometimes, when the mood takes me, I take a break from RuPaul’s Drag Race Quizzes and watching Judge Rinder and I leave the house. Yesterday morning it was for good reason, too, because I went to a job interview in my new city! I feel really positive that I’m getting the ball rolling. *Pause for applause*

I’m perpetually anxiously early, so I decided to arrive in the city three hours before my interview was scheduled to start. After spending my teenagedom hanging around kiddie parks, I’d consider myself a pro-loiterer…except it had just started to rain. But all was not lost, because I’d spotted this little gem of a cafe on my last trip down to Devon and it was top of my list to visit.

WHAT MY MUM GOT ME FOR MY 24TH BIRTHDAY

My favourite time of the year (and quite possibly my mum’s too) is my birthday. I get showered in gifts, so, what’s not to love? Plus, it allows my mum to swan around the expensive makeup shops and provides her with an opportunity to absolve herself from some of the guilt she harbours from living in Australia away from me. *sob* *weep*

Year after year, she goes completely over the top ~not that I’m complaining~ and I always really look forward to seeing what I have to open!

This blog post really is not meant to be braggy or spoilt; I only see my mum once every two years, so these are kind of ‘saved up’ gifts. I’m always just so grateful, and since they’re beauty bits and pieces, they fit quite well into my blog. And they make for some really pretty pictures.

SPRING NEW LOOK HAUL

Having not shopped with New Look for a long, long, long, LONG while, I was pretty impressed when I went for a little browse. I had been seeing so many of my favourite bloggers with their bits and pieces from NL, so I wanted to see what I could pick up. Spring is seriously springing and I am so over wearing big teddy coats and my Dr. Martens. Overall, I am hella impressed with my little haul. I didn’t spend an awful lot; New Look is actually on the higher end of my budget when it comes to shopping (Oh, Primark, how you have spoiled me!) but I did find three pieces that I am in definite *lurve* with.

NYX LIP LINGERIE LIQUID LIPSTICKS COLLECTION + SWATCHES

It’s hard to imagine a time where I didn’t have a liquid lipstick plastered on my face…well, unless you count the 6 days a week I exclaim “I can’t be bothered!” and head out bare-faced. But the fact still stands, when I can be arsed to get some slap on, trust and believe I’ll be using a liquid lippie. The hype boomed in 2016, and we saw loads and loads of brands try to jump on the bandwagon that was dominated by the likes of Kat Von D, Jeffree Star and Huda Beauty’s products.

I wasn’t about to clean out my bank account investing in the whole collections of the giant brands, and I really wanted to find more affordable options. Some of the cheaper ones were okay for a while…I remember dabbling in Gerard Cosmetics’ offerings, along with some La Splash and Sleek variations too. But even after frittering all those pounds, it wasn’t until I discovered the NYX Lip Lingerie Liquid Lipsticks that I really fell in love.

MY NIÇOISE SALAD RECIPE

If seeing the words ‘niçoise salad’ doesn’t immediately make you think of Heather and Megan Vandergeld from White Chicks, then please go, now, and watch White Chicks. We’ve been having a few really beautiful sunny days in February so far, and it’s making me crave ice lollies, Pimm’s and 99s with flakes. And for the first time in literal years, I’m starting to fancy a salad. Now, I completely live by the Bible passage that states: Thou Shalt Not Go Into A Restaurant And Order A Salad, because as eeevvvveeeryyyyone knows, it’s not real food; you’ll want to demolish a burger within an hour or so of polishing one off. And no salad on this earth is worth some of the prices you see on menus nowadays. However, I am definitely of the opinion that for about six or seven quid, you can make a family-size version of one of the most delicious salads around.

SOME REALLY GOOD HIGH-STREET FACE MASKS

Between eating Scotch Eggs, crying over who was eliminated on RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars last week and having various existential crises, I like to give myself ‘pamper nights’. These usually involve running a bath (at a comfortable hundred-degree temperature), a bath bomb, a true crime documentary and definitely a face mask. I’ve tried loads and loads of face masks in the past, and like to think of myself as a bit of connoisseur. My bathroom cupboard is filled to the brim with half-empty tubes of face masks; high end and high street ones. I thought I’d write a couple of posts on my favourite from each of these price points. These are the more affordable options, but ones I really love…

URBAN DECAY | NAKED CHERRY PALETTE REVIEW

After repping a particularly persistent case of conjunctivitis when I was about 12 years old - and running around with pink eyes for months because of it - I vowed never to wear pink or red eyeshadows. I managed to re-infect myself with it every week or so because I simply couldn’t face going into year 7 without my Dream Matte Mousse and Great Lash Mascara slathered on. The sore, weepy, crusty, bruised-looking state my peepers were in wasn’t a great look. So obviously, as soon as I kicked the conjunctivitis once and for all, I invested in the most fetching blue and green eyeshadow palette (alas, I cannot remember the name!). I was living. the. dream.

But then when I started to get a little bit older, and began retiring the makeup products of yesteryear, I realised that maybe my white eyeliner/concealer-lips combo wasn’t the one. And maybe, just maybe, nudes, pinks and reds were actually supposed? to? look? good??? After much Instagram-based research, I made the exciting discovery that one didn’t have to appear to have an eye infection when wearing these colours on their lids. Who’d have thunk it?

So, since then, I’ve frittered what little money I have on eyeshadow palettes. Less of the ever-so fetching blue and green variety - and much much more of the neutrals, nudes, pinks, purples and reds. The first one I got was the Anastasia Beverly Hills Modern Renaissance Palette (a cult favourite, and I definitely can see why), then I got the Naked 3 Palette, then the Anastasia Beverly Hills Soft Glam Palette, some of the Zoeva Palettes…the list goes on and on (the last time I counted my eyeshadow palettes, I had 28. *erk*).
